With a new institutional strategic plan in place and a convoluted existing site architecture, the outgoing Whitehead Institute’s website needed to fundamentally change in order to serve its purpose as an educational tool to grow its community and influence for greater scientific exploration and impact.
Therefore, in partnership with Area17, our digital strategy process started at the ground level and worked up toward a completely reimagined plan for Whitehead Institute’s website.
The new Whitehead website needed to integrate more than 1,500 web pages into a cohesive digital ecosystem that would engage scientists, students, teachers and staff across all devices.
Creating detailed user profiles became a necessary first step to planning the reimagined site. These personas provided more detailed information about the target audience, what they cared most about, and how we should map and prioritize content.
We architected the new design of wi.mit.edu by focusing on a user-centric content strategy and navigation. Area17 conducted in-depth research and workshops with many university stakeholders to identify universal elements to unify the look and feel of each institute’s page. Our team built a new device agnostic sitemap, integrated Acquia search and launched the website on Acquia AWS infrastructure.
